PIECES PERFORMED BY ARS XXI from Granada Province

Northern Lights, Ola Gjeilo

Written by contemporary Norwegian composer, Ola Gjeilo, this unique piece premiered at the National Gallery in Washington DC (U.S.A.) in January 2008. It is dedicated to the astounding natural phenomenon of the Aurora Borealis, the breathtakingly beautiful natural light display which results from the collision of atoms in high altitude regions such as Gjielo’s own native Norway.
A cappella that evokes mystery and wonder, the reverence of this piece goes beyond science, as it also celebrates the love that existed between King Solomon and his wife Shulamite (Song of Songs, Book 6, vs 4-5). Within God’s design, a man and woman live together within the context of marriage, loving each other spiritually, emotionally and physically.
An accomplished pianist, Gjeilo now lives in New York City and is a full-time composer.

Canciones del Alto Duero, Juan-Alfonso García

A native of Spain, composer Juan-Alfonso García was born in Badajoz in 1935, but since 1946 has lived in Granada, where he studied Humanities, Philosophy and Theology. In 1956 he was ordained as a priest and assumed the role of organist within the impressive Cathedral of Granada and has continued to play there for the past 50 years. In addition, Garcia has fine-tuned his skills as a composer, writer and university professor within the Seminario Mayor de Granada. Amongst his accolades we include: the Musical Prize of Andalusia; an Honorary medal from Granada’s International Festival of Music and Dance (2008); as well as the Gold Medal of Merit from this fine city in 2009.
Focusing mainly on religious works, leaning towards both Baroque and contemporary music, García has paid homage to the Sevillian poet Antonio Machado and his work ‘Canciones del Alto Duero’. In this tale, the author recounts his life in Soria, particularly inspired by his great love for Leonor. Describing the happiest time of his life and completely overwhelmed by his profound feelings, this piece reflects a period of great joy and abandonment.

Salmo 150, Ernani Aguiar

One cannot help but feel excited when listening to, or indeed singing, this powerful piece by composer Ernani Aguiar. Praising the Lord with music and dancing, respecting the mighty acts of God, it invites all beings (angels included!) to recognize the omnipotence and glory of the creator. It is this passion that Aguiar has seized upon and interpreted with rhythmic backgrounds and extremely rapid articulations. Clearly delighting in his Brazilian origins, this composer, choral conductor and musicologist was born in 1950 and is currently a professor of music at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, a fellow of the Villa-Lobos Institute and a member of the Academia Brasileira de Música.
